When Alex returned home from work the following evening, she pretended that the previous night never happened. She dropped her work bag by the door and went directly to the kitchen, rummaging through the fridge. The only hint that I hadn’t imagined the whole awkward thing was that she asked if we had any baked ziti leftovers.

Stunned, I squeaked out a reply. “Yeah, bottom shelf to the right.”

She’s just going to pretend like last night didn’t happen. She won’t talk about her feelings, and neither will I?

Plate in hand, she plopped down on the couch next to me.

“What are we watching,” Alex said.

I shrugged and returned my eyes to my laptop. I never watched TV; I only liked it for the background noise as I wrote or edited.

Minutes passed, and I found myself re-reading the exact words over and over. Alex wolfed down the food, then sat gazing at the screen, pensive, her mind far away.

“Are you coming to the park tomorrow for soccer?” she asked finally.

“Yes, why?” I always went. I was there more regularly than Alex herself.

“I was thinking about asking Sabine. You know, so she can meet our friends.”

Our friends. They were not her or my friends, but our friends – and now she would introduce Sabine to them.

“Mmm,” I muttered, the keys of my laptop abnormally loud as I typed a sentence.

“Is that going to bother you?”

“What?”

“Sabine. Coming to the park.”

“Why would it bother me?” I shut my laptop.

“You’ve never minded when I dated anyone before.” Alex leaned against the couch, propped her elbow against the armrest, and rested her chin on one hand. “So what’s up?”

“Nothing,” I said.

“Are you jealous?” Alex scanned my face. “Is that what last night was about?”

Oh shit. The whole room felt instantly hotter and smaller, and I scratched the back of my neck nervously. “No. I was just in the mood. You weren’t interested. No big deal.” That was true. Alex had never turned me down before.

“I can confirm that I definitely was not not interested.“ Her eyes were unbearably blue as she studied me. Her golden hair flowed over one shoulder, and the lamp light reflected off it.

“Oh really?” For some reason, my voice was suddenly hoarse.

“Yeah. But there are rules. I’m supposed to be exclusive. I’m turning over a new leaf, remember?”

“I’ve noticed,” I remarked drily.

Her gaze darkened, and for a moment, I thought Alex might decide that being exclusive wasn’t worth it.

“You said I couldn’t do this, remember? That I couldn’t be serious and wouldn’t settle down. So I’m showing you I can do that.” Alex dragged her hand through her hair. “And meeting the friends is an important step.”

It was true. A significant milestone in any relationship is the meeting of the friends - you bring your new potentially significant person to a dinner, a party, a barbecue, or something, and let them fend for themselves. If they don’t pass muster or aren’t good enough for you, the relationship is dead in the water.

“If it doesn’t
